My Technique

All my works are hand built from slabs and fired in an electric kiln.

For the surface I use a technique called water etching, which is typically used to get a textured surface by drawing with a water resist material (e.g. shellac) on raw clay, then wiping the surface with a damp sponge. The covered areas are not affected and remain raised. See video below.

I employ this technique to get color-rich surfaces, by first painting the surface with several layers of colored slip, so that the damp sponge removes parts of these layers and reveals the layers underneath. Repeating this process of drawing/wiping creates different levels and colors on the surface.

In my latest body of work I have taken this technique a step further by making the painted slip separate from the surface on which it was laid, letting it float over it with its own thin, softly deformed body.

The surface was already painted in layers of black, red, pink and white. The damp sponge is used to reveal these layers.
